News on a Specific ICE Worksite Enforcement Effort

According to sources, the Los Angeles company American Apparel Inc. has about one-third or 1,600 unauthorized employees on its payroll. ICE is also not able to verify employment eligibility for another 200 of the company's employees. The company is cooperating with ICE to ensure they hire only authorized individuals.

South Carolina is Enforcing E-Verify Law

Beginning July 1, 2009, the South Carolina Illegal Immigration Reform Act took effect. The Act requires businesses with 100 or more employees, or those doing business with state and local governments to verify the work eligibility of new hires through E-Verify or by asking for a driver’s license from South Carolina or one of the states approved by the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles. According to sources, the state Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation will begin conducting random audits of some of the largest businesses’ employment documents as part of a crackdown on the hiring of unauthorized workers. The audits will focus on employers who generally hire immigrant workforces.
